the ocean vuong quote reminds me of one by shirley jackson - “it’s spring, you’re young, you’re lovely, you have a right to be happy. come back into the world.”

it's honestly wild to me when people use this shirley jackson quote out of context (context is a very dark book that does not necessarily argue in favor of the above quote).

i’ve read shirley’s other work but not “we have always lived in the castle” so i didn’t know the context! i think it’s a really beautiful quote when it’s stripped back but i totally understand that it doesn’t mean as much without an understanding of the original text. thanks for pointing it out and providing some insight!

it's a really good book and I'd recommend it! only with the knowledge that it's also a very weird book (I've seen Jackson referred to as the American queen of weird, so if you've read other works by her, you might be prepared). I believe it was the last book she completed before her death, and it's about two sisters who live with their uncle in a sort of social isolation after the rest of their very wealthy family was murdered several years earlier.

the quote above is popular online because it sounds so nice! the brief context (slight spoilers here, if you'd rather know nothing about it) is a family friend comes to visit and tries to convince the older sister to return to the world. it's a nice sentiment, but it also comes with the sense that it would mean the sister abandoning the people she loves and her home for the artificial world of the wealthy who were likely still to judge her anyway. Shirley Jackson was not fond of society.

also, rereading my initial comment, and it comes off so rude. sorry about that. I'll admit I was in a bad mood for entirely unrelated reasons, and it bled through. I should take that as a lesson to not leave any comments online when I'm not a good space.

no worries! it didn't seem negative at all - more like ... constructive! it sounds like a book i'd like and i love jackson's other work so i will definitely check it out!

I love this playlist. I started the book today and I'm picturing Cécile as Jane Birkin in La Piscine.
